Himalaya Alpine Guides is a logistics and guide service founded by Luke Smithwick, a highly experienced and knowledgeable western mountain guide that is seasonally-based in Kathmandu, Nepal and Leh, India. He is continually developing new skiing, climbing and trekking trips through local interaction and research. Himalaya Alpine Guides is a strong resource: researching new peaks and regions, leading with the latest in western guiding safety standards and protocol, and bridging the gap between cultures to bring you a trip of a lifetime. With more than half of our trips to unclimbed peaks each year, Himalaya Alpine Guides is known for small groups, creative well thought out itineraries, and exploratory trips to and beyond the classic destinations in the Himalayas.

Trekking

Trekking is simply walking. We offer treks in five countries currently including India, Nepal, Pakistan, China and Bhutan. Treks are either in teahouse-style or expedition-style. Tea house style means you stay in a lodge each night after trekking and order from a menu. Expedition style means we are bringing tents and stoves and cooking meals and camping each night after trekking. We enjoy both and take the extra time to ensure that our itineraries are created to catch the best real life experiences through cultural interaction, sightseeing, photography, peak hikes and unique gastronomic experiences 🙂  .

Mountaineering

Mountaineering means climbing with others assisting (oftentimes with climbers of the Sherpa family name) in carrying your tents, ropes and expedition supplies on mountain. The climbing route is established by a Sherpa team using fixed ropes and also your camps on mountain are oftentimes established in advance.  This is the most popular form of Himalayan climbing and how most people climb mountains above 6000 meters.  We offer many of these trips every year to unclimbed, aesthetic or classic peaks with trained mountain guides leading them.

Alpinism

Alpinism is climbing routes or peaks without support (people carrying your equipment, tents, etc.) or fixed ropes above base camp. This is the purest form of climbing and for that reason is the hardest and most demanding.  We encourage those interested to seek this form of climbing yet it significantly reduces your chance of reaching the summit of a peak or route.

Ski Touring

Ski touring is using climbing skins on a ski to ascend from a lodge or base camp to terrain that has enough slope or gradient to ski down. We do ski touring in remote base camps in expedition style, from a lodge with a gondola, with helicopters, and with horses. There are a unique variety of ski touring options at reasonable altitudes in the Himalayas with high quality snow.

Ski Mountaineering

Ski mountaineering is climbing peaks with your skis and then descending the peak with skis. We do this in many different locales of the Himalayas and always in expedition style. Expedition style means we have a base camp with a cook and sleeping tents.

Bespoke Expeditions

Bespoke expeditions are trips created from your interest or a desired objective. Many of our trips begin this way. We encourage you to email us if you have an idea, a group, a concept or goal in the Himalayas and we will interact with you to create it.

Helicopter Skiing

Helicopter skiing is boarding a helicopter with your ski or snowboard equipment, flying to the top of a backcountry area, and skiing back down. We are starting to offer these programs globally, and also mixing in ski and splitboard touring with the helicopter (single lift with helicopter to a watershed, and touring there for the day).  Email us to learn of the latest offerings.

Organizing my trip

Many contact us with their own plans. Let us know your trekking, skiing, and climbing goals and we are glad to assist in getting you there.

Film locations, logistics and execution

We are now adept at locations, logistics and execution of film projects in the Himalayas for skiing, climbing, alpinism, mountaineering, documentary, news and art pieces.

Just want to thank you (Luke) again for looking after us on the recent expedition and making sure we had everything. And not to forget the rafting, that was special. I had a great great time and experience with you all.

This was, without question, one of the most magnificent trips I have done. The best trekking food I’ve ever had.

Having spent three superb weeks in Lahdaq and remote Zanskar with Luke, I can heartily recommend him as a guide. In addition to the requisite alpine skills and Himalaya experience, Luke is blessed with sharp instincts, sound judgement and a considerate regard for his clients’ abilities and needs. With great good humour, Luke and his expert team guided us to places that exceeded all expectations, and gave us brilliant opportunities to experience them for ourselves. Almost a year later, I am still mining the rich vein of impressions gained during the exploratory and adventurous leg of our trek through Zanskar, and feel that I owe Luke and his team a debt of gratitude worth more than any amount paid. My advice to anyone wanting a real adventure in that part of the world, as opposed to a mere holiday, can be distilled into four words: go with Himalaya Alpine.

The level of service was amazing, brilliant food, tents up quickly, being helped over any potential difficult piece. It was a fabtrip.

We really enjoyed the boutique style. Exceptional guides / cook, comfortable equipment: tents conzatina folding mats, plastic mats under tents, etc. I was impressed with the resources provided on my trek last year which influenced my decision to do this trip but this trips resources (people, equipment) surpasses last years – pretty impressive!

I trekked the Upper Zanskar Traverse with Luke and his competent team last year and have been recommending them to other interested trekker friends ever since. I have trekked in many areas and this has been one of the most memorable treks for me. This was due to Luke’s leadership and expert team, the comfortable conditions upon arrival at our campsites and the stunning, isolated area we were traversing. It was a completely different adventure trekking experience and one that is still extremely vivid to me although many months have passed. I would not hesitate to trek again with Luke and his outstanding team.

I recently returned home from a ski mountaineering expedition to 6,000 m peaks in the Ladakh region of northern India with Luke and Himalaya Alpine Guides. I pretty much had a smile stuck on my face for the entire two weeks. Just thinking about it brings me back to that happy place, cruising up the Markha Valley in awe of the grandeur, slowly climbing higher through the culturally and historically rich local settlements, and finally reaching the snow. Our beautiful horses carried our camp, our local crew, who Luke has worked with for over a decade, took care of every comforting detail, Luke kept us laughing, learning, exploring, climbing, safely moving through the vast wildness of the Himalaya. Phuntsok fed us amazingly delicious and nutritious curries, dahls, warm bread, chai, espresso, and somehow we had fresh fruit and vegetables the whole trip. Luke has a mellow and respectful attitude, with a high value on keeping the fun factor high in every stage of the trip, including planning and training. He’s got a pristine safety record and works diligently to keep it that way. We all know that Luke has the technical skills, strength, and managerial experience to be an exceptional guide. He also has a genuine appreciation for people, from both near and far, and a deep dedication to protecting the places he loves, through environmental activism (recently moving HAG towards carbon neutrality) and education. I sit in gratitude for the experiences I just had, and eagerly await when my turn to return to the Himalaya rolls around again.

Luke was constantly sharing local knowledge, contextual background, local language, and historical insights on our six-day approach. the food was superb, prepared fresh daily by the local cook. the tents and dining tent were ample, in excellent condition, and comfortable. on the approach we covered glacier travel, as well as skills for the technical aspects we might encounter on the mountains. by the time we got to the mountains themselves, everyone in the team had rehearsed and we all felt safe. a safe, comfortable trip to a completely remote zone of outstanding descents, with local insight, great food, and a professional guide. i have no notes.

Luke is a fantastic guide, he takes amazing care of his guided clients and his professional crew. In addition to the adventure of the mountains, he takes time to explore and understand the local culture, and is interested in pursuing an authentic experience. Our trip was once-in-a-lifetime… until I can free some time for the next one.

When I was 18 my mom and I took a trip to the Himalayas and used Luke Smithwick’s guiding services. 10 years later I still have yet to find mountains that compare to the Himalayas not just in magnitude or intensity but in the experiences that these mountains can give you, they can change you if you let it. It’s a place so special not just because of its big mountains but also because of the people that live there, their culture, and the perspective it can give you. Of course it’s a place you wouldn’t ever want to over exploit, a place you would want to keep secret from the world so that flocks of people don’t go and try and change it, westernize it. However, it’s also a place that I urge everyone to go experience because of what it gave me. I understand why luke has spent so much of his time exploring and guiding in these landscapes. I feel very lucky to have been able to see it and be exposed to it through his eyes. You can tell his love for this place exudes through his whole being and it’s unique how he is able to share that love with the people that he guides there.

Did a ski mountaineering trip with Luke to the Karakoram back in June '18 and highly recommend. Luke is an enthusiast and is keen to explore less obvious spots, keeping it to a small group without seeking to become an impersonal commercial operator. He takes safety seriously, with tons of experience from running the safety team in Gulmarg. He had great on the ground knowledge, so always felt in good hands - and had a top time.

Trekked the Karakoram in June with 2 friends along with 2 others. Had an amazing and surreal experience. Luke was absolutely outstanding in all aspects. I always felt informed and safe. High quality tents and authentic food. Best of all, great company and conversation all day, especially at dinner. Highest recommendation….. if you have considered this on your bucket list, Luke is your guide.

Himalaya Alpine Guides toured us through Ladakh India and it was a once in a lifetime trip. Although I’m sure logistics were challenging we never felt that. Luke and his team made it feel easy and streamlined.

Skiing in the Himalayas is an experience like none other. Luke has an extensive background and network in both the local culture and as a professional ski-mountaineering guide. Each trip with Himalayan Mountain Guides is customized and unique. I highly recommend this for exploratory backcountry skiers and mountaineers.
